Australian and New South Wales Litre Sprint
champion Sean Barnett successfully defended
his National Title in Toowoomba over Easter
from Keith Blatch (QLD) and Steve Brown (NSW)
The NASR supported event attracted 33 drivers,
19 from New South Wales and 14 from the host
state. Barnett started the 25-lap final from
pole after winning the A-Dash, however he did
not have things all his own way with Brown
leading the first lap.
“I don’t think you can beat your first win,”
said Barnett, “but this one came very close
because it was the first time we had been to
Toowoomba in 3 to 4 years and we were the
fastest car in hot laps and then just
progressed through the weekend.
“The only problem I had was I hit a rut in
turn four and nearly crashed on the first lap.
Steve Brown passed us but I was able to pass
him half a lap later on the back straight. It
was close in lapped traffic and I feel the
leader is at an disadvantage because the cars
behind can plan their way through but there
was about 3 or 4 stoppages and we were able to
pull away each time,” said the jubilant
winner.
Meanwhile Brown slipped into the clutches of
Blatch and a torrid battle for second position
then ensued which was only settled in the
final laps of the Championship.
Craig Geering (NSW) finished fourth from Dave
Fanning (QLD) and Paul Freeman (NSW) who was
the hard charger in the field, finishing sixth
after starting thirteenth.
Barnett recorded the fastest lap of the race
on the third circuit with a time of 13.321
(118.91 km/hr) around the 440 metre Queensland
venue to claim his third title in four years
and another victory for New South Wales.
