his first ever racing tour of the United States and
will be competing at numerous Late Model events in
Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana over the next few
weeks. McHugh will be piloting a Badger Motorsports
Wild for Milwaukee-based team owner Al Atkinson.
Jamie has enjoyed a long standing relationship with
Kevin Katzenberg from Wild Race Cars Incorporated,
who helped organize the drive with the Badger
Motorsports team.
McHugh is the best credentialed Australian speedway
sedan competitor ever to undertake an extended
racing program in the US and the two-time national
championship winner is very excited about the
opportunity to showcase his talents against some of
America’s finest. The full schedule of events
comprises 11 nights of competition over four weeks,
with two-time Australian Touring Car champion Glenn
Seton traveling with McHugh on his US sojourn. Wife
Sharon, son Lockie and longtime friend Bob Howlett
and will join Jamie later in the tour to lend their
support to this latest chapter in what has been a
diverse and illustrious motorsport career.
Soon
after arriving in America, Jamie took part in his
first ever Late Model event at Kankakee Speedway on
Friday 30 July. After a less than auspicious start
to his campaign with a spin in qualifying, McHugh
advanced from the back of his heat race to finish in
8th spot and then finished 5th in the consolation
and ultimately missed a spot in the A Main.
The following night produced better results at
LaSalle Speedway where McHugh qualified 9th in a
smallish 23-car field. He finished 7th in his heat
race, which secured a fourth row start in the main
event. Having advanced one spot to occupy 6th,
Jamie was looking likely to secure 5th when a flat
tyre ended his challenge and left him 17th overall
and lamenting what might have been.
