Super Sedan Season Ready to Launch
SSA Media
The 2011/2012 season of competition for the Super Sedan
Association gets underway next weekend with the opening rounds
of the 2011/2012 Hotondo Homes (Rockhampton) Super Sedan
Championship Series and the Think Money Development Series.
Fittingly, the event is scheduled for Rockhampton Speedway on
Saturday, October 8.
A
lot of work has gone in behind the scenes in preparation for the
new seson, with series organisers very confident that the
2011/2012 season will be the most successful for quite some
time. For the first time ever, the Super Sedan Association will
sanction three separate competitions throughout the season with
the introduction of the Archerfield Speedway Track Championship,
which gets underway on October 15.
The Hotondo Homes (Rockhampton) Championship Series will again
traverse Queensland and interstate, with 11 rounds of
competition scheduled at 7 different venues. Despite the losses
incurred by tracks last season as a result of the unprecedented
wet weather, all venues from last season are back on board and
an event has been allocated to Blackwater Speedway for the very
first time. The Hotondo Homes-sponsored opening round on October
8 will have extra prizemoney and points up for grabs to reward
those teams making the trek north. The full schedule of events
for the Hotondo Homes (Rockhampton) Championship Series is as
follows:
October 8 Rockhampton Speedway
November 5 Charlton Raceway, Toowoomba
November 19 Mothar Mountain Speedway, Gympie
December 10 Maryborough Speedway
January 21 Kingaroy Speedway
January 28 Maryborough Speedway
February 11 Charlton Raceway, Toowoomba
March 3 Kingaroy Speedway
March 24 Blackwater Speedway
April 21 Lismore Speedway
May 12 Mothar Mountain Speedway, Gympie
An exciting addition to the calendar this season is the inaugural Mothar
Mountain Masters at Gympie’s Mothar Mountain Speedway on May 12.
This $3000-to-win event, scheduled just a week after the
Australian Championship is decided in Brisbane, will double as
the Grand Final of the Hotondo Homes (Rockhampton) Championship
Series.
The race format for the coming season is yet to be decided but,
according to SSA President Chris Metcalf, they are looking for a
format that will best showcase the category and the strong
driver roster that supports the series. “We will probably try a
few different things this season with regard to the race format,
but our main priority is to step things up and make sure we
aren’t just doing the same old things we have always done. The
fans deserve better than that and the venues that support our
racing deserve better than that. Furthermore, we must ensure we
provide a consistently good product at every show in an effort
to attract and retain a whole new breed of Super Sedan fans”.
This series has consistently set the benchmark for Super Sedan
racing in Australia and this season will again have many of
Australia’s best drivers taking part, including current
Australian Champion Steve Jordan, current and two-time National
Series champ Darren Kane, former NSSS titleholder Mat Pascoe and
multiple state title winner Wayne Brims. Other drivers who have
excelled in recent seasons and will be amongst the championship
contenders again this season include Craig Torr, Jason Campbell,
Sean Black, Tania Smith, Ian Brims and Steve Pearce.
Of course, the SSA remains committed to providing opportunities
for lower budget and less experienced drivers and the
Development Series will be again be staged this season, in
conjunction with the first eight rounds of the Championship
Series.
A
new innovation for the comings season is the Archerfield
Speedway Track Championship, to be staged over five rounds.
Archerfield promoter John Kelly has implemented an exciting new
race format and prizemoney structure in a season that will also
see the Archerfield circuit hosting the Australian Super Sedan
Championship on May 5 and 6 next year. Metcalf is adamant that
the establishment of a track championship at Brisbane is a great
new initiative. “Track championships at Archerfield for Dirt
Modifieds and Speedcars in recent seasons have resulted in
significant growth for both categories and hopefully it will
bring the same benefits for Super Sedans”. Each round of the
Archerfield Track Championship will pay $1500 to the feature
winner and the race format, which will see heat grids seeded in
accordance with points averages accumulated at previous rounds –
should see more drivers in contention for a greater share of the
prizemoney on offer. In addition to the opening round on October
15, subsequent events are scheduled for November 12, January 14,
March 17 and May 26.
In addition to the support from Hotondo Homes (Rockhampton) and
Think Money, welcome additions to the sponsorship roster this
season are Old Man’s Garage and Roma Windscreens, with Shock
Doctor confirmed as a contingency sponsor for the season ahead..
