The WA Super Sedan Championship has been won by Kodee Brown at the
Carnarvon Speedway, after an exciting A Main.
Going into the final night Rob Bawdon and Kodee Brown lead the
Championship, which had seen some of the top contenders fail to start
due to mechanical problems.
Kodee Brown won the final, leading all of the way to defeat defending
Champion Rob Bawdon second, Gary Higgs third and Murray Wellstead
fourth. Higgs started the event from the back of the field after engine
problems precluded him from competing last night, while Murray Wellstead
broke his wrist on the first lap of the Championship decider, was a very
credible fourth.
The race started frantically with a spin on the opening turn which
ultimately saw Wellstead break his wrist. A complete restart saw all
cars rejoin.
Brown got the jump on Bawdon on the second start, with Travis Jackson
and Keith Higgs, Rick Musarra and Bert Vosbergen close behind, in a high
speed freight train.
A restart on lap eight would see Dustin Higgs sent to the infield with a
flat tyre. A lap later Travis Jackson would spin in turn two, which
again brought the field to caution, with the Carnarvon driver sent to
the rear of the field.
Brown continued to lead Bawdon, Keith Higgs, Vosbergen and Wellstead,
with Rick Musarra spinning on turn two on lap eleven, putting him a lap
down when Brown, Bawdon and Higgs passed the Kalgoorlie driver on the
back straight.
On lap fourteen, Bert Vosbergen would spin, also in turn two, causing a
four car collision, with the veteran drivers bold campaign halted as he
was sent to the rear of the field. Vosbergen would withdraw a lap later
with the left front wheel damaged on his Pantera.
The field bunched again, with Brown now leading Keith Higgs, who passed
Bawdon just prior to the stoppage with Wellstead, Murray Iwanow and Joel
Hanford in the top six.
Hanford spun on lap nineteen causing another halt, with the Broome based
racer retiring from the event.
Keith Higgs tried valiantly to pass Brown in the middle stages of the
race, but was unable to move Brown from the lead. Keith HIggs would
retire from the event while in second place with twelve laps to go,
putting the defending Champion, Rob Bawdon back into second place.
Murray Wellstead was now in third place with Gary Higgs incredibly
fourth, after starting at the rear of the field.
A final restart on lap 28 for the retirement of Murray Iwanow, bunched
the field again, with Brown having to hold off the defending Champion
again. Brown opened up the gap between himself and Bawdon, with
Wellstead, Gary Higgs, Dean Shore and Terry Green all fighting for the
minor placings.
Brown won by just under a second from Bawdon, with Higgs putting a big
move around the outside of Wellstead on the last corner to take third
from the injured Wellstead. Dean Shore who crashed in heat ten, and lost
valuable starting places in the A Main, was a credible fifth, with Terry
Green a gallant sixth while Rick Musarra finishing seventh, after
spinning early in the race.
For Kodee Brown though, the twenty one year old becomes the youngest
driver ever to win the Super Sedan title. Brown only decided to enter
the event at the last minute, after spending two weeks fishing off the
northwest coast with his Father.
