Great Field of Super Sedan Stars for Maryborough
SSA Media Release
The 2011/2012 Hotondo Homes (Rockhampton) Super
Sedan Championship Series heads to Maryborough Speedway this
weekend, with round four of the championship to be decided on
Saturday night (December 10). A very strong field of cars from
across Queensland and interstate have nominated for the event,
which is be part of a special Go Pink for Cancer fundraising
event on behalf of the McGrath Foundation.
Headlining the entry list is current Australian
Super Sedan champion Steve Jordan and current National Super
Sedan Series champion Darren Kane, both of whom will be looking
for a strong result in their final outing before Christmas.
Jordan scored his Australian Championship win in spectacular
fashion last season in Tasmania and has enjoyed a strong start
to his 2012 campaign with a third-place finish at the previous
round in Gympie. Kane, though, is a two-time national title
winner and is the man of the moment, having won the Gympie event
and the New South Wales Championship over consecutive weekends
in the lead-up to this weekend.
However, in addition to Australia’s top two
competitors, there are several other highly-credentialed
participants amongst the 25+ cars taking part in the hostilities
this weekend. The New South Wales-based duo of Wayne Brims (3
New South Wales Championships and 2 Victorian Championships) and
Ian Brims (New South Wales championship winner and former
Australian Modified Production Champion) are again making the
trek over the border to take on Queensland’s finest. Whilst
Wayne Brims debuted his brand new car with a top-five result in
Gympie, it is Ian Brims who currently sits second overall in the
point standings after consistent results in all three rounds
staged thus far. Lismore’s Tania Smith is also heading north for
the third outing in her return season of competition and, should
she rediscover her best form, she may well prove a real threat
in the feature event.
Wayne Randall is the most experienced driver in
the field having won three Queensland Super Sedan Championships
and as one of only two drivers (along with Kane) to have won the
National Super Sedan Series on two occasions. Randall stormed
home in round three to secure a runner-up finish behind Kane,
his second such result in as many rounds, so he will be
determined to make the step to the top of the podium. Another
long-time campaigner in Paul Geary has also nominated for the
event, his first competitive outing since winning this series in
2009/2010.
Other drivers to watch include Jason Campbell,
Sean Black and Mark Pagel, all of whom have featured on the
podium in this championship and have been in strong form so far
this season to be situated inside the top ten in the
championship standings. Another strong contender for success on
Saturday night will be Gympie youngster Dempsie Pails, who is
enjoying his best season ever and currently sits third in the
championship. Mackay’s Scott Galea, meanwhile, has produced
plenty of speed in his two appearances so far this season and
just needs more consistency and a little luck to upstage his
more experienced adversaries.
Also in the field for what is shaping as a superb
showdown are Dale Christensen, who also sits inside the top ten,
along with Barry Craft, Graeme Elliott, Shayne Lau, Jack Childs
and Greg Maher, while Cairns’ Damien Bugler will be filling the
seat usually occupied by series leader Matt Pascoe, whose
absence is sure to provide plenty of motivation for his rivals
to score maximum points.
Also on the program will be round four of the
Think Money Super Sedan Development Series in which Colin Moss
will be looking to expand his series lead against the biggest
field of challengers so far this season. Moss will take on a
diverse field that includes some very experienced stagers in Kev
Barkle and Les Pascoe as well as rookie racers such as Sam
Grundy and Joshua McLaren. Gordon Shaw, Russell Dobson, Craig
Shaw and Rodney Craft, who has hopefully rectified the multitude
of mechanical problems that plagued him in the previous round,
complete the field.
The race format for the night will see each
driver contest three qualifying heats to determine starting
positions for the 30-lap feature race, which is proudly
sponsored by Think Money. The support program includes Modified
Productions, Street Sedans and Junior Sedans, with prizes on
offer to the best presented driver and team who Go Pink for
Cancer and show their support for the McGrath Foundation.
In addition to the spectacular racing action on
offer, there will be plenty of fun off the track as well with
rides, face painting and a huge fireworks show, while the Super
Sedan Association will also have showbags and other goodies to
give away. Racing gets underway at 3.00pm, with the V8 Super
Sedans to hit the track for hot laps at approximately 5.45pm.
