TOOWOOMBA
SSA Media
Release
On April 30th and May 1st
the Queensland Super Sedan Association stormed Charlton Speedway
in Toowoomba and it was the current national champion Steve
Jordan that came out the winner taking victory on the second
night of racing in front of Wayne Brims and Jye O’Brien.
With support from Willmott’s Haulage
night one began for the main game ‘Proton’ series division one
guys with the fastest heat of the weekend won by series points
leader Darren Kane (Dominator – Dominator Race Cars) ahead of
veteran John Leslight in Lenny Black’s car for night one, Steve
Pearce, Mark Pagel, Tim O’Shea, Wayne Brims, Ian Brims (Rocket –
Brims Earthmoving), Lee Wilson and Jordan in Len Pascoe’s car
who had mechanical issues. The win was by a massive 10 seconds.
In another nonstop heat O’Brien took the
win from Bevan Collins, Graeme Elliott (Rocket – Walz Group),
Sean Black, Matt Pascoe, Jason Campbell, Shayne Lau (Rocket –
Smiths Silage Contractors), Craig Torr and Jack Childs in the
second heat leading from the green to the chequered.
Wayne Brims won the third heat which
again went without a stoppage winning from Pagel (Dominator –
Gympie Pool World), Lau, O’Brien, Campbell, Black, Pearce, Barry
Craft and Wilson.
Matt Pascoe had business pick up in the
fourth heat when defeating series second placed driver Torr and
Kane who charged from seventh. Ian Brims, Collins, Elliott,
Leslight, O’Shea (O’Shea – Moody Civil & Pipes) and Childs all
finished behind the top three.
Kane won his second heat of the night
from his closest points rival Torr and Matt Pascoe (Sweet – NQ
Proline Plasterboard) who began in seventh place then O’Shea,
Collins, Leslight, Ian Brims, Childs and Elliott. Brims was
involved in a lap seven crash and he finished on the infield
grass whilst Elliott and his race car tried to climb the turn
one wall on lap three and from Elliott directly he said “I seen
the blue and black of the sky out my front window and when I hit
the ground again I couldn’t wait to go check my pant’s!”
Wayne Brims (Rocket – Brims Coastal
Cement) then won the last heat ahead of Pagel, Campbell, Pearce,
O’Brien, Black (Sweet – Kelly’s Transport), Lau, Craft and
Wilson in another nonstop heat in a quality nights racing.
The round 16 ‘Willmott’s Haulage’ Proton
series final was then unable to be run due to defective lighting
at the facility which made it un-safe to race.
Prior to the lights effecting the
division one drivers the ‘Send with us’ series for the division
2 racers managed to get their feature race done.
John Tischler (Oz Metal Recyclers) who
had won his previous two race meetings this season began in the
right fashion by winning heat one with David Musch, Allan
Schultz, Brendan Doyle (BJ Car Sales), Peter Smith, Darren
Saunders, Michael Jenner and Grant Shaw following his lead.
Musch then was able to win the second
heat from Jenner, Shaw the series points leader and Tischler,
Smith (Smith Silage Contractors), Schultz and Saunders whilst
Len Pascoe was having power steering concerns and pulled out on
lap one.
A nonstop third heat was won by Jenner
(Steve’s DVD’s) showing the evenness of the field with 3 heats
won by 3 different drivers. Smith, Schultz, Tischler, Doyle,
Shaw (Depco Drilling) and Musch were all out-gunned by the
winner.
Musch (Ken Mill’s Toyota) then led from
the green all the way to victory in the feature race with
Tischler a close second nearly securing three wins from three
race meetings. Smith who was closest to series leader Shaw in
points was next followed by Saunders, Schultz (AMS Mechanical),
Shaw, Doyle and Len Pascoe.
Musch was delighted after the win.
“Everything tonight went right for us. We tried things and it
worked, it was one of those nights. Its only my fourth time out
in this car built by Owen Turner however we do a lot of time in
the shed on this car and we try these new idea’s and good
results are the reward.”
The series points then closed with Shaw
this seasons Development series winner comfortably over Smith
and Doyle.
The ‘Send with us’ series drivers then
got to go home or jump into the night two field with the
division one guys in the re-scheduled round 12 of the “Proton’
series supported by “Afco Shock Doctor’ with Wayne Randall in
Lennie Blacks race car for the night in a great gesture to allow
the sponsor to compete in the round he is supporting.
Heat one of six was led from pole
position start Jordan right to the end with Musch in his Owen
Turner built car on a high from the previous nights feature win
in division two taking second in front of Ian Brims, Lau, Wayne
Brims, Craft, Pearce (Dominator – Frater Asbestos & Demolition),
Elliott and Kane. Craft pulled infield on lap nine losing second
place with a flat, Pearce had hit the turn one wall and broken a
diff tube, axle and a calliper, Elliott broke a steering rack
and Kane had low oil pressure.
Pagel then won the second heat by a
handy 3 and a half seconds over Collins (Sweet – Chapman Auto
Repairs), Campbell, Matt Pascoe, Len Pascoe, Wilson and O’Brien
in another nonstop heat.
Another win to Jordan (Dominator –
Munrocraft) in heat three from Wayne Brims, Torr, Lau, Ian Brims
and Jason Campbell (Smith – Southside 4 x 4) after Jordan picked
off Brims on lap four to take the front running.
O’Brien (Sweet – The Performance Centre)
won the third heat by over 6 seconds from Craft, Musch, Black,
Randall (Rocket –Sedl Earthmoving) the Lenny Black owned car,
Len Pascoe and Collins.
Black led one the nation’s best drivers
home in the fourth heat when Randall muscled the loan car he
was driving into second with Kane hot on his heels then came
Collins, O’Brien, Musch, Matt Pascoe and Pagel.
And in the last heat of the weekend Torr
(Rocket – Hosepro) was too strong for Wayne Brims, Jordan,
Campbell, Craft, Lau, Len Pascoe, Wilson and Ian Brims in a
great drive.
The 30 lap final began with Wayne Brims
the pole sitter with Jordan alongside and then Campbell,
Collins, O’Brien, Lau, Black and Torr and Campbell was
immediately on the backwards slide in a fifteen car field that
had Kane in thirteenth and Matt Pascoe in fifteenth positions at
the start.
Matt Pascoe had mechanical issues on lap
sixteen ending his challenge.
Jordan led from lap one and was never
headed over race distance as the Australian Champion defeated
Wayne Brims, O’Brien, Collins, Black, Lau, Pagel, Kane who just
got in front of his closest rival Torr and then Campbell,
Randall, Len Pascoe and Craft.
Jordan had this to say after the event.
“I turned up to the track to help Les Pascoe and had a steer of
the Pascoe car on night one before handing back to Les and since
I was there anyways Jack (Childs) offered me a steer of his car
for the final on night one which didn’t eventuate due to
lighting issues. So he said to me I should drive it on night
two. The crew were wonderful and the car chassis and set up was
on the button. It was a sweet drive. There is nothing between
the Dominator and Sweet Chassis’s and it was good to get a drive
of Jack’s car and put a smile on his face by winning. He was
grinning from ear to ear.”
Current top five points in the Proton
Series are Kane 2526, Torr 2445, Jordan 2275, Campbell 2145 and
Pearce 1953.
