Gary Higgs Wins Again, This Time In Kalgoorlie
Jason Crowe - SSA Media
The Super Sedan Summer Series moved to Kalgoorlie tonight for the eighth round of the series, after last night being in Esperance. The night would be action packed, with only nine cars able to start the twenty lap main event, with several of those, not making it to the finish.

Gary Higgs prevailed again, proving to be a dominant force in the West Australian Super Sedan ranks, winning two 20 lap Feature races in 24 hours.

Starting from pole position in the main event, a yellow light stoppage on the opening lap for a four car pile up, was the only thing stopping Higgs from a comprehensive victory. Rob Bawdon and Murray Iwanow would be victims of the crash and watched the race unfold from the infield, as did Dean Shore a lap later.

On a slick race track, Higgs pulled away from Dustin Higgs who drove well and finished a credible second, just ahead of Rick Musarra and Kevin Bell, the only driver in the race to advance through the depeleted field.

Gary Higgs won by almost half a lap in a Feature race which would have just six finish a gruelling two nights of competition.

Earlier in the night, the heat races were very eventful which led to the nine car starting grid for the Feature race. Gary Higgs, as with last night, was the only driver to win two heats, while four others scored a single victory.

Heat one would show no indication of what was to come, with Gary Higgs continuing on his strong form, winning the opening ten lap heat from Rick Musarra and Kodee Brown. It would prove to be the only heat where every car finished.

Rob Bawdon brought the local crowd to life with an all the way win in heat two, downing Murray Iwanow and Bill Gibbs. Peter Lyalls night would end with a snapped rear trailing arm.

Dustin Higgs returned to the winners list after crashing last night, to take victory in heat three, from Iwanow who would be the runner up for the second time for the night, while Travis Jackson would finish third. State Champion, Rob Bawdon with not finish with a deflated right rear tyre.

Only four drivers would finish heat four, with Gary Higgs winning comfortably from Rick Musarra, who like Iwanow in the race previous, finished second again, while Dean Shore would finish third. Kevin Bell who earlier in the night would not start, with power steering issues, suffered mechanical failure once on the track and finish on the grass with Bill Gibbs, who also would not complete the ten laps.

Murray Iwanow finally broke through in heat five, defeating Gary Higgs and Rob Bawdon in a great race.

The final heat saw Kodee Brown break through for his maiden victory in the series, after transferring from Modified Productions last season. Brown held off the tenacious Dustin Higgs while Bill Gibbs was credited with third. The race was stopped two laps from the scheduled ten, after a very heavy crash involving Gibbs, Jim Holland and Blake Jackson. Holland was taken to hospital with a suspected broken collarbone and wrist (to be confirmed), while Gibbs would suffer severe damage to his car.

After a weekend of racing which certainly took its toll, the Super Sedan drivers will have plenty of time before the ninth round of the series, which will be at the Perth Motorplex on Saturday, 24 January 2009.
