Jordan Doubles Up For Jack Childs Racing
Author : Jason Crowe - SSA Media
For the second weekend in a row, Steve Jordan drove for the opposition chassis maker and came up trumps, when he once again steered Jack Childs # 24 Dominator to victory at Mothar Mountain, Gympie.
Sean Black drove a brilliant race to finish second ahead of Jason Campbell returning to the scene of his victory a few weeks ago. With support from ‘Hotondo Homes’ Rockhampton and ‘Ken Mills Toyota’ the ‘Ian Boettcher Proton’ series thrilled the crowd, right from heat one with series points leader Darren Kane setting a 8 lap time of 2.18.638 in a nonstop race he won from Jordan, Mark Pagel, Graeme Elliott and Kev Barkle, after Kane (Dominator – Dominator Race Chassis) passed Jordan on the very last lap to win by the barest of margins at 0.047 of a second.
Steve Pearce (Dominator – Frater Asbestos & Demolition) broke a left lower control arm and returned to the track whilst Jamie McHugh had a broken final drive or a split axle spline as it is sometimes known and his race meeting was finished. Jason Campbell (Steve Smith Chassis – Southside 4 x 4) then led from start to finish in heat two defeating Craig Torr, Barry Craft, Tim O’Shea, Black and Allen Schultz (OTR – AMS Mechanical) with a margin of 2.869 seconds. Kane returned on track in the third heat of the night to secure victory from Pagel (Dominator – Gympie Pool World), Pearce, Schultz, Campbell and Elliott (Rocket – Walz Group) after Pearce had initially led until the end of lap four. Kane then moved from third to first on lap five and went on to win by 2.394 seconds. In another flag to flag heat race Torr (Rocket – Hosepro) won by 2 seconds over the chasing Black, Craft, Jordan, O’Shea (O’Shea – Moody Civil & Pipes) and Barkle. The final round of heats began with victory for Pagel ahead of Jordan, Pearce, Black (Sweet – Kelly’s Transport), Barkle, Elliott and Craft by .573 of a second with Pagel leading every lap of heat five. Then with the fastest heat time of the night Kane in a time of 2.15.318 defeated Torr, Campbell and Schultz to take three heat wins from three heat starts with a margin of 5.703 seconds over the field. The twenty five lap feature race was then headed by Kane, Torr, Pagel, Jordan (Dominator – Munrocraft), Campbell, Black, O’Shea and Pearce. Kane led from the drop of the green with Craft (Intruder – UMR Engines) the first to head infield with a broken fan belt before Pagel joined him on lap two after contact with the wall damaged his car as he and Campbell battled for track position. Torr held second until Jordan passed him on lap four and Black took third away from Torr on lap five. With a broken right front suspension Torr exited the race on lap six whilst Kane still held sway at the front of the pack. After leading across the line on lap 13 Kane pulled infield with a broken left front suspension whilst Jordan took the lead from Black and Pearce. Pearce briefly snatched second place from Black before losing his steering with the left front wheel trapped under the spoiler after contact through the hairpin section of the track. Jordan secured the win by just over a second from Black, Campbell, Barkle (OTR – Barkle Transport), O’Shea, Schultz and Elliott as the only drivers to pass the chequered flag. After the win Jordan spoke about how it all went for him. “Kane was long gone. He was going to win by 5 or 6 car lengths and we were not going to catch him. We had a broken right rear shocker and all the weight went right over the left rear of our car and put it out of balance. When Kane exited we assumed the lead and finished it off. That’s two from two with Jack Childs racing and with Campbell only 45 points behind me in the series I spose we will have to see if Jack wants to try for a hat trick of wins at Brisbane in a few weeks. Thanks again to Jack and his team, they are a great bunch of people and I thank them for their work and the drive.” Points in the series with the last round to come in Brisbane in three weeks times now has Kane with a slightly increased lead over second place on 2759 points. Torr is 2666 points then Jordan 2541, Campbell 2396 and Pearce on 2147 the top five.
