Brisbane Sedan Season Starts this Saturday
SSA Media Release
The
wait is over for Brisbane speedway sedan fans with the opening
round of the Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway Super Sedan
Track Championship to be decided this Saturday night (January
14). With the first attempt to get the series underway
curtailed by rain and the next event cancelled to accommodate
the New South Wales Championship in Sydney, it is a much later
start than normal for Super Sedan competition at Archerfield,
however the field is strong and the scene is set for a great
night of tin top competition.
Headlining the 18-car field are the two most dominant performers
of recent seasons in Darren Kane and Matt Pascoe. Kane is the
current New South Wales champion and National Super Sedan Series
titleholder, while Pascoe is the Queensland Champion and a
former NSSS champ. Both drivers have been in terrific form so
far this season with multiple feature race wins each. Kane
currently leads the National Series after five rounds of
competition, while Pascoe is concentrating on local competition
this season and currently sits second overall in the Super Sedan
Association standings.
Other
strong contenders on Saturday night will be former New South
Wales and Victorian champ Wayne Brims and two-time NSSS champion
Wayne Randall, both of whom are fresh from some strong results
interstate in recent weeks. Randall is particularly keen to be
back on track in front of a home crowd and is confident that
Archerfield track will produce some great racing, while Brims is
always at his best in Brisbane.
Of
course, the likes of Sean Black, Jason Campbell, Dale
Christensen, Scott Galea and former Super Sedan Association
champ Paul Geary, in only his second outing after a long
lay-off, have also proven themselves capable of running at the
front of the field and will be determined to snare the $1500 on
offer to the winner of the 30-lap feature event. Meanwhile,
Barry Craft has shown some very good form in NSSS competition in
recent weeks and Steve Pearce bolsters the field with his first
appearance of the season.
Also
in the field for what is the first prelude to the Australian
Super Sedan Championship to be staged at Archerfield in May are
Gympie-based youngster Dempsie Pails, Greg Maher, Jack Childs,
Rodney Craft, Colin Moss and the Kingaroy-based duo of David
Musch and Super Sedan rookie Travis Barron.
The
format for the event will see each driver contest two qualifying
heats, with positions drawn for the first heat and then inverted
for heat two. Finishing positions in the feature event will
determine the points average that will be used to determine heat
grid positions in subsequent rounds of the championship, so
there is plenty at stake on Saturday night.
The
support program comprises Lightning Sprints, Formula 500s and
Stockcars, with pit gates opening at 3:00pm. Main gates open at
4:00pm, with early racing getting underway at approximately
4:30pm. Super Sedans will hit the track at around 6:00pm to
kick off the main program.
