The World Series Sprintcars Management Group has confirmed Kalgoorile International Speedway as the host venue for Round 13 of the 2009/10 series.

“Kalgoorlie fits perfectly into the series schedule as contracted drivers make their way across the Nullabor for the Grand Final in Perth and it has a history of producing exciting racing and first time winners so we are extremely pleased to be returning to the Goldfields venue after a year’s absence,” said WSS Chairman Geoff Kendrick.

Kalgoorlie opted not to host a round last year when only six contracted drivers signed up for the series, however with more than double that confirmed for this year, the opportunity to once again host the best drivers from Australia and America was to good to miss.

Manjimup Speedway was the other Western Australian track being considered for the February 3 date and although an application to make the necessary improvements to the venue had been granted conditional approval by Shire councilors, the club could not obtain final approval in time to proceed.

A WSS event brings with it an influx of up to 5000 spectators as well as top Sprintcar drivers from across the State, Country and America in what would have been the biggest speedway meeting held in the region. Club President Garry Kingston will continue to pursue planning approval to redevelop the speedway in time for the 2010/11 series.

The improvements include firebreaks, security fencing, larger pit area, more exits, construction of a new canteen and toilet, expansion of spectator area and improved safety fence.

The last occasion Kalgoorlie hosted as WSS round, talented Queensland racer Peter Lack won his first ever WSS event. “Our first win was an unbelievable experience. When you look back, at the time we didn’t realise what we had achieved. These WSS features are not easy to win and to do so was terrific. I still remember this race like it was yesterday and still visualize the pass we made on Brooke (Tatnell) and then the pass we made for the lead, it was a great race,” recalled Lack.

The 2009/10 WSS schedule was released in July and now the final piece of the puzzle has fallen into place. So WA fans rejoice, there will be a hungry pack of the world’s best Sprintcar drivers seeking to strike gold in the wild west on the 3rd of February 2010.
