Super Sedans Bound for Kingaroy

SSA Media Release

After a lengthy absence, Super Sedan racing returns to Kingaroy Speedway this Saturday night (January 21) for a feast of V8 thunder as 20 drivers do battle on the completely revamped circuit.  The long awaited and much anticipated return to Kingaroy, which is round five of the Hotondo Homes (Rockhampton) Super Sedan Championship Series, has attracted drivers from throughout Queensland and New South Wales for a showdown at the showground.

Having been locked in combat all season, Queensland champion Matt Pascoe and NSW veteran Ian Brims will continue their battle for championship supremacy.  Pascoe won the opening two rounds of the series, but Brims has since taken over the lead of the championship and will be desperate to maintain his advantage.  Their duel continued last weekend in Brisbane when they shared the front row in the feature event at Archerfield Speedway, with Pascoe emerging the victor on that occasion.

However, rest assured that this event is far from a two-horse race with several contenders primed for a big result to upstage the series leaders and reignite their own championship chances.  Gympie’s Mark Pagel is in superb form at the moment, having won the previous round in Maryborough and performed with distinction during the recent National Super Sedan Series events in Queensland, Pagel certainly starts as one of the favourites this weekend.

Meanwhile, former New South Wales and Victorian champion Wayne Brims has been improving with every outing aboard his new Pontiac and, as a prolific feature winner, his first victory of the season cannot be far away. Likewise, Jason Campbell and Sean Black have been in terrific form all year without breaking through for a win and are certainly capable of emerging victorious in the 30-lap feature event.

A welcome addition to the field this weekend is Rockhampton’s Craig Torr, making his first appearance for the season.  Despite his lack of track time, the Rockhampton-based Torr is a proven performer - having finished third overall in this championship last season - and he will certainly be worth watching.

As the most improved driver this season, Brisbane’s Barry Craft now deservedly finds himself in consideration as a genuine contender, his performance last weekend in Brisbane was particularly meritorious and he is brimming with confidence. Greg Maher also impressed in Brisbane and will be looking to back up with another strong result. Gympie’s Dempsie Pails has also been very impressive this season to be sitting fourth overall in the standings, while Steve Pearce and former series champion Paul Geary are proven performers yet to rediscover their best form.

For local fans, Kingaroy will be well represented in the field with David Musch and Super Sedan rookie Travis Barron primed to take on all comers to defend their home territory.  Both drivers are former Modified Production competitors who will be hoping for plenty of hometown support in their efforts to upstage the out-of-towners.

Also on the program will be round five of the Think Money Super Sedan Development Series with Colin Moss looking to reclaim his series lead in the absence of points leader Sam Grundy. Taking the challenge to Moss will be Craig Shaw, Rodney Craft, Kev Barkle, Russell Dobson and Gordon Shaw, who is making the long haul from Mackay.

In what is shaping as massive night of racing, the mighty Super Sedans will be supported by round four of the Modified Production South West All Stars Series and the Queensland Speedcar Championship. Racing gets underway at 4:00pm, with Super Sedans hitting the track at 5:00pm.
