Kane increases Lead in Championship
SSA Media Release

Darren Kane was in ominous form at Brisbane International Speedway on Saturday night (February 19), cruising to victory in the sixth completed round of the Ian Boettcher Proton Super Sedan Championship Series.  On a night when courtesy and common sense were in short supply, Kane was smooth and fast every time he took to the track and was subsequently rewarded with a flag-to-flag victory in the 30-lap feature.

With Kane untroubled out front and Steve Pearce seemingly secure in second spot, all interest centered on a sensational scrap for third between rookie Sean Black and NSSS champ Matt Pascoe that eventually fell in favor of the latter, whose perseverance with the highline eventually paid dividends after starting from position seven. The Sweet-mounted duo raced side-by-side for 20 laps without incident and when Pearce expired with just 3 laps remaining, Pascoe pounced from the ensuing restart, charging around the outside of Black through turn two to secure the runner-up position.  For Black, a third-place finish is testimony to his talent and demeanor, refusing to concede to his more experienced rival in another polished performance that has moved him into the top ten in the championship standings.

After an inglorious start to the night, Rockhampton’s Craig Torr bounced back to finish fourth overall and keep his championship hopes alive. Having been sent to the rear on the opening lap, Ian Brims finished fifth ahead of Lenny Black.  Such was the rate of attrition during the event, another rookie in John Tischler was the only other driver to go the distance.

The heat racing was riddled with crashes and chaos that brought a premature end for several fancied contenders, including Queensland champ Matt Williams and series contenders in Des Korn, Darren Lester and Jason Campbell. Wins fell in favour of Kane (x2), Sean Black, Lenny Black, Brims and Mackay’s Scott Galea.

The pole shuffled brought few surprises with Kane downing Brims to secure pole position for the AOK Towing/Pennant Commercial Equipment-sponsored feature race.  Pearce and Galea were next, with the father/son Black duo sharing row three.  Kane ultimately opted to start from position two in the feature, a decision that proved prophetic as he raced into the lead, leaving Brims to the clutches of the pursuing pack. When contact from Galea sent Brims spearing infield, the first of several restarts ensued.  A few laps later, Galea’s race ended when he smote the concrete in the main straight.  Whilst early encounters with lapped traffic allowed Pearce to challenge Kane, the lead expanded as the field dwindled and Kane remained in complete control, expanding his series lead.
