Looking Back, Looking Forward

SSA Media Release

With Christmas fast approaching, the Super Sedan Association is currently in the midst of a brief break in competition before the action hots up again in the New Year.  After a slow start to the year, the racing has certainly intensified over the last few rounds of competition in both the Hotondo Homes (Rockhampton) Championship Series and the Think Money Development Series.

The 2011/2012 season kicked off in Rockhampton on October 8 with Mat Pascoe storming to victory in the opening round of competition. Jason Campbell finished in second spot aboard a brand new Coastal Business Brokers Dominator-Mustang, with Super Sedan rookie Andrew Roberts finishing a fine third.  In the Development Series, Roberts was the standout, with Darren Hawkings and Colin Moss next best.

Toowoomba’s Charlton Raceway hosted round two of the championship on November 5 and again it was Pascoe (Proline NQ Plasterboard Contractors Sweet-Dodge) who emerged triumphant in the 30-lap feature event to expand his lead in the Hotondo Homes (Rockhampton) championship standings.  Wayne Randall finished second on this occasion in the Lyall Fisher-owned Roma Windscreens Rocket-Pontiac, with defending series champion Darren Kane completing the podium.  It was Moss who topped the Development Series on this occasion.

Round three saw teams tackling Gympie’s Mothar Mountain Speedway on November 19 and it was Kane (Ian Boettcher Race Parts Dominator- Mazda RX8) who proved too strong on this occasion, leading home Australian champion Steve Jordan (JB Racewear Sweet-Dodge) and Wayne Randall. The Development Series unearthed some new talent with Bundaberg-based rookie Joshua McLaren finishing first overall in advance of fellow rookie Sam Grundy and Moss.

Despite the constant threat of rain, round four was completed successfully at Maryborough Speedway on December 10 and it was Mark Pagel who proved too strong on this occasion, leading home Sean Black (Clifford Street Auto Sweet-Dodge) and New South Welshman Wayne Brims in a gruelling feature event.  Against the biggest field thus far in the Development Series, Sam Grundy took top spot over Kev Barkle and McLaren. With Pascoe stepping aside to allow Damien Bugler to contest this event, it was the ever-consistent Ian Brims who emerged with the championship points lead heading into the Christmas break.

In the weeks ahead, some drivers will enjoy an extended break from competition to refresh and regroup, while others will be taking part in selected rounds of the Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series at Gympie (December 29), Toowoomba (December 31) and Sydney (January 4).  Given the level of competition each week in the Super Sedan Association championships, it will be no surprise to see one or more SSA competitors upstage the contracted drivers in the Carline NSSS.

The SSA season resumes on January 14 at Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway for the opening round of the track championship. The first attempt to get this series underway fell victim to inclement weather, while the second scheduled round was cancelled to accommodate the New South Wales Championship in Sydney.  Several drivers are very keen to get back on track in Brisbane in preparation for the Australian Super Sedan Championship to be decided at the circuit on May 4 and 5. Subsequent rounds of the Archerfield Track Championship will be contested on March 17 and May 26.

The Hotondo Homes (Rockhampton) Championship Series and Think Money Development Series will both be reignited at Kingaroy Speedway on January 21. Maryborough Speedway will stage round five on January 28, with teams returning to Toowoomba for round seven on February 11. Kingaroy will host round eight on March 3, which will be followed by the first ever SSA-sanctioned event at Blackwater Speedway on March 24.  The annual Grenville Anderson East Coast Grand National at Lismore Speedway on April 21 and the Mothar Mountain Masters at Gympie on May 12 will ensure a spectacular finish to the season.

The Super Sedan Association would like to take this opportunity to thank wish all our valued competitors, sponsors, tracks and race fans for their support so far this season and wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and a happy, safe and prosperous New Year.  We wish all drivers competing in the NSSS the very best of luck and we look forward to seeing everybody back on track in Brisbane on January 14 and for the remainder of the 2011/2012 SSA season of competition.
