Darren Kane and the Ian Boettcher Race Parts Team
The Custom Transporters and Trailers, SSA Australian Super Sedan Championship has been won by Darren Kane at the Lismore Showgrounds in Northern New South Wales.
The final started at a cracking pace, but was marred by a rollover on the back straight involving Matt Pascoe. Pascoe climbed the back straight fence before landing on his roof, forcing him to withdraw from the event after qualifying sixth.
Michael Hally also withdrew at this point in a separate incident.
At the other end of the circuit, Jamie McHugh, the defending National Champion pulled to the grass, reportedly with power steering issues.
On the next attempt at a start, Lachlan Onley rolled in turn two, and Wayne Randall would also be forced to withdraw with a flat tyre. With Craig McGeorge not starting the final, forty laps were still to be run, with 14 cars remaining.
The race then settled into a rythym with Darren Kane taking the lead, a lead he would hold for the entire race distance.
Behind him a great battle developed between Paul Geary and Mick Nicola, who traded places on numerous occassions. They would be caught by Wayne Brims and Brad Smith, as the four drivers, continually traded track position throughout the event.
Kane continued to lead and lapped cars at will, opening a large lead of his rivals.
Mick Nicola would lose power on lap twenty two and went slowly back through the field and would withdraw a lap later.
Wayne Brims passed both Smith and Geary on the outside in turn four to take second place, and set out to chase down the rampant Kane.
On lap 33, the yellows came on for the first time after the initial starts, when Colin Hockley spun in the main straight. Going back to the last recorded lap, Kane had to endure an eight lap restart.
Kane though was never caught and opened a large lead again, in a dominant display in the National Final.
Wayne Brims would hold off Brad Smith and Paul Geary in an intriguing battle, which raged throughout the event, with Ian Brims the only other car on the lead lap.
All drivers on the presentation dias were exhausted after the race, as the hot, steamy conditions took their toll, in a race which nearly went flag to flag once it got underway.
Kevin Purton was awarded the Grenville Anderson Trophy by Speedway Sedans Australia officials, while Tania Smith on behalf of the Rocket Chassis collected the constructors award.
