Release
Darren Kane joined an elite group at
Tyrepower Sydney Speedway tonight, racing to victory in the
Lukey Exhausts 40-lap finale to clinch the 2010/2011 Carline
Mufflers National Super Sedan Series. Having qualified his Ian
Boettcher Race Parts Mazda RX8 on pole position, Kane found
himself as far back as fourth at one stage before surging back
to the front in the closing stages to score a memorable win.
Victoria’s Michael Nicola looked the likely winner with 10 laps
remaining, having inherited the lead when Jamie McHugh broke a
tailshaft and stuttered to a halt whilst in control. Nicola
ultimately finished second in his best result of the year, with
Jarrod Harper surging forward from position 11 to finish a fine
third.
Des Korn also enjoyed a great night,
advancing into fourth spot by race’s end in front of Shane Best
and Trent Wilson, who subsequently secured a runner-up finish in
the championship. Ash Bergmeier picked up the Shock Doctor
Lucky Sevens, with 8th-finishing Lucas Roberts claiming the
Supercharge Hard Charger. Sam Hughes finished his series
campaign solidly in finishing 9th, with Tony Barklimore rounding
out the top ten ahead of Brad Smith, who was very strong in
qualifying but endured a miserable feature race run that saw him
drop to third in the championship standings.
Completing the finishers in the first
ever NSSS event staged in Sydney were Colin Hockley, Bill Miller
and Bernie Roberts. Joining McHugh on the infield were Brett
Hignett, Darren Lester, Kevin Purton, David MacKenzie and Chris
Brown, while Australian champ Steve Jordan was unable to take
his place on the feature race grid courtesy of a fuel pump
breakage.
In a race punctuated by stoppages in
the early laps, there was great racing at the front of the field
on a fast two-lane race track as firstly McHugh, then Nicola and
finally Kane took turns leading the parade. The racing back in
the pack also provided plenty of interest as the likes of
Harper, Korn, Wilson and Roberts surged forward.
Kane and McHugh were the standouts in
qualifying with two heat wins apiece, with Nicola, Barklimore,
Hignett, Best and Bergmeier sharing the others.
The championship trophy, and a host of
other awards, will be presented at the 2010/2011 Carline
Mufflers National Super Sedan Series Presentation Dinner to be
held at the Novotel Sydney Olympic Park tomorrow night. Tickets
are still available by phoning Tony Parkinson on 0403 253070.
