KANE TAKES THE GRENVILLE, DAYLIGHT SECOND
SSA Media
Release
Ipswich race
driver Darren Kane took the spoils for the fifth time this
season in only seven ‘Ian Boettcher Proton’ series event feature
starts with a dominate display in the 50 lap ‘Grenville Anderson
East Coast Classic’ at Lismore Speedway leading from start to
finish with an 11 second distance between himself and second as
he crossed the finish line.
Kane (Dominator –
Dominator Race Cars) led the complete race distance in a race
time of just over 12 minutes with Jamie McHugh finishing second
and current Australian Champion Steve Jordan back in third place
in the ‘Afco Racing Parts USA’ sponsored feature event for the
Queensland Super Sedan Association.
Kane stretched his
lead in the points table as he now has 1885 points leading Craig
Torr on 1681 from Jordan on 1481, Steve Pearce on 1456 and Jason
Campbell on 1405.
Six heat races
were run with Kane smashing the previous one lap Super Sedan
track record on lap one of heat one with a new time of 13.196
under cutting the previous best time of 13.8 seconds for a Super
Sedan lap of the Lismore Showgrounds. Kane took a all the way
win from pole position from McHugh, Jordan, Pearce, Matt Pascoe
(Sweet – NQ Proline Plasterboard Contractors), Sean Black, Colin
Hockley and Barry Craft in one of only two heat races that ran
green to chequer on the night.
Heat two was a
mixed bag for the Brims boys with Wayne Brims taking the win
after leading from the green whilst Ian Brims (Rocket – Brims
Earthmoving) tore his car apart hitting the wall causing
significant damage that may see him struggle to compete on April
the 2nd at Brisbane. Mick Doblo finished second with
Campbell (Steve Smith Chassis – Southside 4 x 4), Matt Williams,
David Musch and Torr in tow.
Pearce (Dominator
– Frater Asbestos & Demolition) the pole sitter in the third
heat led all the way also with Williams, Doblo, Torr, Campbell,
Kane and Jordan whilst Craft (Intruder – UMR Engines) blew a
head gasket to end his race night on a sour note.
Starting back in
sixth place in the fourth heat McHugh punched through the field
to take the lead on lap 5 and defeat Black Sweet – Kelly’s
Transport), Pascoe, Hockley and Wayne Brims (Rocket – Brims
Coastal Cement).
McHugh then
doubled up when he came out in heat five and led start to finish
over Doblo (Rocket – Ocean Tyres), Wayne Brims, Black and Pascoe
with Hockley (Dominator – Corporate Cleaning Services) being
sent rear of the field after a lap one racing incident where he
and McHugh came together and Hockley copping the wrath of the
stewards. In what Hockley described as a racing incident after
McHugh had a half lose he crunched into McHugh which damaged the
bumper bar that was rubbing on the tyres which caused him to
pull infield.
Kane then joined
McHugh with two heat wins on the evening when he passed Jordan
(Sweet – Back Page Sports Bar) who had led every lap until the
last one with Torr finishing third from Pearce, Williams (Sweet
– Regional Waste Services) and Campbell.
The feature field
then lined up with Kane, Pearce, McHugh (Sweet – The Caravan
Repair Company), Doblo, Williams and Wayne Brims the top six
leading the pack at the green whilst Pascoe didn’t start the
feature after blowing a rocker.
Kane set his
fastest lap on lap one of the race and quickly kicked in gear
leading from Pearce, McHugh and Jordan.
Lap 10 was the end
of the road for Campbell as he blew a gearbox and pulled infield
without causing any caution lights with Musch (OTR – Ken Mills
Toyota) joining him infield on lap 24.
Pearce succumbed
to fatigue on lap 31 when McHugh, Jordan and Doblo all got past
whilst Kane was rounding up the field as he blew past the back
markers. Doblo set his fastest lap time on lap 48 showing that
he was coming on strong at the end of the race however the
chequer flag dropped at the end of lap 50 and Kane took the
spoils in front of McHugh, Jordan, Doblo, Pearce, Wayne Brims,
Williams, Torr (Rocket – Hosepro), Black and Hockley after
lapping the field upto the back of Pearce who was next in the
firing line for a big 11 second win over second place in a new
50 lap record time of around 12 minutes.
After the win Kane
was understandably thrilled with winning the ‘Grenville’ “It is
an honour to win this race I cannot thank my sponsors and crew
enough for the car they give to me each weekend. We work hard to
remain the dominate chassis builder in the category and to now
have five wins from seven rounds we couldn’t have written a
better script. We look forward to doing it all again next week
at Brisbane and we thank the Lismore Speedway team and their
sponsors for giving us this event to run and all the QSSA
sponsors for their support of our racing each week.”
