Darren Kane extended his lead in the chase for the Ian Boettcher
Proton Super Sedan Championship Series with a hard fought win
under adversity in round six at Brisbane International Speedway
on Saturday night (November 27). Despite a flat left front tyre
on his Ian Boettcher Race Parts Dominator-Mazda RX8 from the
opening laps, Kane pounced on a mid-race mistake from race
leader Steve Jordan to emerge victorious for the fourth time
this season.
Although he started the B&T Bobcat and Tipper
Services-sponsored feature race from pole position, Kane found
himself relegated by Jordan before the end of the opening lap.
Jordan remained in control, albeit marginally, until he erred
exiting turn four on lap 18 and half-spun his Back Page Sports
Bar Sweet-Dodge to the infield before rejoining in fifth.
The slick conditions worked in Kane’s favour and the deflated
donut proved only a minor inconvenience as he withstood the
advances of Rockhampton’s Craig Torr, who continued his terrific
run of results with a runner-up finish aboard his Hosepro
Rocket-Pontiac. Wayne Brims advanced from position five to
finish third ahead of the recovering Jordan, with ninth-starting
Matt Pascoe - piloting Adam Bradford’s Sweet-Dodge on this
occasion – completing the first five.
Jye O’Brien was the biggest mover through the field, charging
from 11th to 6th to finish ahead of Jason Campbell, Darren
Lester, Sean Black and Paul Galea, who impressed at times
throughout the night and was ultimately rewarded with a top ten
finish. Steve Pearce and Lenny Black were the only others from
the 18-car field to complete the 30-lap journey. In what was a
highly entertaining race despite multiple stoppages, casualties
included Colin Hockley, Des Korn, Dale Christensen, Jack Childs,
Grant Shaw and Michael Hally.
Kane was the standout in qualifying with two heat wins, while
Wayne Brims, Jordan, Pascoe, Hally, Campbell, Korn and Hockley
also visited victory lane. Other standout performers in the
preliminaries included Torr, Lester and Ian Brims.
The Top Six Dash saw Kane reaffirm his pole status with a win
over Jordan, Torr and a hapless Hockley. On lap five, Wayne
Brims got of out of shape in turn two and triggered a collision
between Hockley and Ian Brims that unfortunately forced the
latter out of action for the night.
The next round of competition in the 2010/2011 Ian Boettcher
Proton Super Sedan Championship Series is at the revamped
Kingaroy Speedway on Saturday, December 18.
