Pascoe Takes Kingaroy Feature
SSA Media Release
Under
difficult, yet ultimately fortuitous circumstances, Queensland
champion Matt Pascoe emerged victorious in round 5 of the
Hotondo Homes (Rockhampton) Super Sedan Championship Series at
Kingaroy Speedway on Saturday, January 21. On a track that was
brutally unforgiving, Pascoe inherited the front running when
race leader Mark Pagel and Rockhampton’s Craig Torr, who was
very impressive in his first outing for the year, exited the
event after collecting a spun Dempsie Pails on lap 9.
Making the most of his good fortune, Pascoe charged to the
chequer to defeat Wayne Brims, with series leader Ian Brims
finishing in third spot ahead of Jason Campbell and Paul Geary
in a race reduced to just 15 laps due to time constraints as a
result of ongoing efforts from the club to improve track
conditions. Greg Maher snared sixth spot ahead of Barry Craft
and Gordon Shaw, with Steve Pearce, Craig Shaw and Geoff
O’Keeffe completing the finishers.
A
strong 21-car field fronted for competition and it was Pascoe
who topped qualifying with two heat wins. Others to visit
victory lane during the heats were Pagel, Pearce, Wayne Brims
and David Musch.
When
the green flag flew to get the feature underway, Torr shot to
the lead from pole position with Pagel pouncing from row two to
relegate Pascoe, who started on the outside front row. Despite
the treacherous conditions, Torr and Pagel ran side-by-side
without incident until Pagel made a decisive pass on lap 6 to
secure the lead. Despite being shadowed by Torr and Pascoe,
Pagel looked on target to secure his second consecutive round
win. However, on lap 9, Pagel was looming large on the
backmarkers when Pails pirouetted and was collected by both
Pagel and Torr, forcing all three cars to the infield. Pascoe
subsequently completed the remaining six laps without incident
to collect his fourth SSA feature win of the season.
Despite finishing third, Ian Brims maintains the series lead
heading into the next round of the Hotondo Homes (Rockhampton)
Super Sedan Championship Series, which will be decided at
Toowoomba’s Charlton Raceway on Saturday, February 11.
In
the Think Money Development Series, Gordon Shaw topped the
scorecard and has moved to the top of the championship
standings.
