Ian Brims won a controversial
Round 17 of the Ian Boettcher
Volkswagen Super Sedan Series at
Lismore Speedway on Saturday
night April 26, taking over the
race lead on lap eighteen to win
his second A-Main at the
Northern Rivers venue in as many
starts. Craig McGeorge finished
second to maintain his spot in
the top three of the Series
points with Lenny Black filling
the final podium position ahead
of Tania Smith and Geoff
O'Keefe.
The
Lismore event was a race of
survival with a number of
competitors failing to finish
the Feature race which was
ultimately declared, with a
rougher than normal track
causing a number of incidents
between drivers all the way
through the field. Of the
eighteen starters, only five
drivers were deemed to have
finished the event.
It
took a number of attempts to get
the Feature event under way with
incidents aplenty between a
number of drivers as they
battled for position on a very
difficult and unpredictable
racing surface. Darren Kane was
forced to check up on the
opening lap to miss pole sitter
Wayne Randall, triggering a
multi-car collision that forced
the second restart. Wayne Brims
led the race for the majority of
the first twenty laps until he
got together with a lapped car,
the incident also ending second
placed Steve Jordan's race.
However,
the most controversial incident
happened late in the race
between Ian Brims and Wayne
Randall, the two fighting for
the lead when Brims hooked a rut
and speared across the track
into Randall who was trying to
make a pass on the outside. An
obviously dejected Randall made
his thoughts on the incident
very clear as Brims passed by
under yellow and also expressed
his thoughts to the crowd via
the infield microphone when
asked for comment by the track
announcer. Video footage shows
the track conditions played a
major role in the incident.
A
number of cars sustained
substantial damage through the
event, leaving some major repair
bills and long hours in the shop
for a number of teams ahead of
this weekend's Qld Title at
Gympie. Drivers who recorded
DNF's in the Lismore Feature
included Randall, Geoff
Phillips, Gavin Northfield, Des
Korn, Series leader Wayne Brims,
Steve Jordan, Matt Pascoe, Steve
Pearce, Darren Kane, Pete
Warren, Barry Craft, Steve van
Zeeland and Wayne Miles.
Only
one Round remains in the 2007/08
Ian Boettcher Volkswagen Super
Sedan Series, the final event
scheduled for May 17 at
Maryborough Speedway just north
of Brisbane. Wayne Brims has an
unassailable lead in the points
and is in line to pick up his
second Championship Trophy in as
many years at the Presentation
Dinner in July. The battle for
second and third between Ian
Brims and Craig McGeorge is far
from over though, with just
thirty-eight points separating
the two heading into the Series
Final.
The
Maryborough date also includes
the final Round of the 2007/08
AS Concrete Pumping Development
Series. Like Brims in the
Division 1 class, Alex Jenner
has already wrapped up the Title
ahead of the final Round of the
Championship.
