The annual post-season Super Sedan
Association (Inc) Awards Dinner was
held on Saturday night July 26 at the
Brisbane Holiday Inn Function Centre,
with a feast of presentations made to
drivers and members alike following
another successful season of racing at
Qld and Northern NSW venues.
Invited
by the Association as a special guest
MC for the evening, three-time
Australian Champion Ron Pyne from
NSW proved to be a popular choice for
the role, keeping the one hundred and
fifty plus patrons on hand entertained
with a myriad of racing and traveling
stories from days past. Pyne clearly
enjoyed the opportunity to catch up
with his racing mates from north of
the border, moving amongst the guests
throughout the evening to chat
one-on-one and re-live some old tales
while also doing an admirable job up
on the dais for the presentations.
The
first of the awards presented was
to AS Concrete Pumping Service
Development Series driver Dempsie
Pails who collected Rookie Of The Year
honours following his very credible
third place finish in the season
points tally. Steve Pearce was awarded
the trophy for Best Presented Car,
thanking his team at Amazing Signs for
the work they put in to keep the car
looking the part at each and every
event and Gavin Northfield picked up
the Hard Charger award for the season.
Dempsie
Pails returned to the dais to collect
his trophy for third place in the
Development Series, followed by Trevor
Brehmer (2nd) and Series Champion Alex
Jenner. All three drivers thanked
their sponsors, crew and families for
their on-going support and indicated
they will be back next season to do it
all again.
Craig
McGeorge, in his first season back
behind the wheel of the family owned
Pontiac Grand Prix/Rocket #3 after an
extended layoff, finished third in the
Ian Boettcher Volkswagen Series and
accepted his award from Ron Pyne on
behalf of the McGeorge family. With a
new Rocket chassis on order and a
fresh engine being pieced together
over the off-season, McGeorge will
continue his chase for Championship
honours when the 2008/09 season kicks
off in October.
Ian
Brims collected his trophy for second
place in the Series, giving thanks to
his sponsors and family for their
support and gave a special mention to
John Leslight for his very valuable
contribution to his race team this
past season. After a slow start to the
Championship, Ian Brims stormed back
into contention for Series honours in
the second half of the season with
three Round wins and six top five
finishes in the final nine Rounds of
the Series, including back-to-back
wins at Lismore Speedway.
The
major awards for the Ian Boettcher
Volkswagen Championship Series went to
Wayne Brims, who won three of the
opening four Rounds to establish
himself as the front runner before
going on to win the Championship by a
comfortable three hundred and
sixty-nine (369) point margin when the
chequers fell at the end of the
eighteenth and final Round. It was a
career year for Brims who also placed
second in the National Super Sedan
Series this season, with the
remarkable statistic of twenty-eight
starts for twenty-seven finishes
carrying him to his success. Brims
will return in 2008/09 with a new
Danny Smith Rocket chassis in his bid
for successive Championships.
Other
awards presented during the evening
went to Gavin Northfield (Driver's
Driver), Barry Craft (Geoff McHugh
Award) and Darren Kane was presented
with the Perpetual Trophy for his
victory in the 2008 Qld Title in the
Ian Boettcher Dominator Race car. It
was the strongest year yet for the
Dominator Race cars, taking the
Queensland and Australian Titles.
Special mentions and appreciation
plaques were presented to John
McGeorge and Ian Boettcher for their
valuable support to the Association in
recent years, in particular for their
efforts in supporting both
the Championship and
Development Series since their
inception.
A
number of items were auctioned off to
raise money for the Association during
the course of the evening, with many
items reaching their reserve price
fairly quickly and the guests at table
16 coming in for some special
treatment and bid raising at the hands
of acting-auctioneer Ron Pyne. Annette
Knight and Karen Geary were also
thanked by the guests with a round of
applause for their roles in organising
this year's Awards Dinner.
The
evening concluded with the
announcement of naming rights sponsors
for next year's Series, with Bergmeier
Engineering (Championship Series) and
Red Devil Radiators (Development
Series) being selected from close to
one hundred entries for the honour.
Both Series will commence on October
18 in Rockhampton, with ten dates
confirmed for the Championship Series
and five Rounds for the Development
Series locked in for the 2008/09
season.
