With a car up for grabs and the challenge in recent weeks having been thrown down by Australian Champion Steve Jordan, Darren Kane finished the season magnificently to take victory in the Queensland Super Sedan Association ‘Ian Boettcher Proton’ series by 99 points after the completion of the final round at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway.

The night started well for Kane when starting in seventh place he was able to reach second place by lap nine of ten in heat one and finish only .421 of a second behind winner Jordan (Sweet – Back Page Sports Bar). The distance between first to last was extremely close as 5.3 seconds covered the distance between the complete field with Jordan winning from Kane, Steve Pearce, Jye O’Brien, Wayne Brims, Lee Wilson, Graeme Elliott and Adam Bradford (Sweet – QTR Tyres). Kane set an impressive 14.68 second lap time during the race.

Ten laps were completed in the second heat in a time of 2:34.9 as Jason Campbell (Steve Smith Racecars – Southside 4 x 4) went on to win by .401 of a second after leading every lap with Mick Nicola the Victorian chasing him all the way whilst Wayne Randall set the fastest laps down on paper during this heat but below the standard set by Kane in heat one. Craig Torr was third then Ian Brims, Sean Black, Randall, Barry Craft and John Tischler (Oz Metal Recyclers).

Kane then lowered the best ten lap time to 2:34.7 for the night in heat three when he passed Randall (Rocket – Roma Windscreens) who led until lap five. Kane went on to win from Jordan who took second on lap seven then Randall, Black (Sweet – Kelly’s Transport), Elliott and Bradford by 1.793 seconds distance between first and second. Tischler was unable to start with electrical issues.

Wayne Brims (Rocket – Brims Coastal Cement) then led start to finish in the fourth heat to defeat O’Brien, Craft, Nicola, Campbell, Torr, Ian Brims, Pearce and Wilson. Ian Brims (Rocket – Brims Earthmoving) lost three places when he spun and ripped through the infield and Wayne scored a win by 1.453 seconds from O’Brien.

Nicola then also had a start to finish win in the fifth heat whilst Torr past Pearce (Dominator – Fraters Asbestos & Demolition) on lap six to take second with Ian Brims fourth in front of Wayne Brims. Margin of victory was 1.085 seconds.

Randall was the early shaker in the final heat using the high side to round up Kane, Craft (Intruder – UMR Engines) and Bradford and take the lead before Kane wrested that back on lap five with Jordan following him past Randall to complete the top three placings with Craft, Tischler, Black, O’Brien, Elliott (Rocket – Waltz Group) and Bradford the other finishers. Kane won by 1.162 seconds.

The feature field line up in the ‘Send With Us’ supported final round lined up with Kane, Jordan and Nicola (Dominator – East Coast Traffic Control) providing an all star top three. Then Torr who had been second most of the season in points started alongside Nicola

Kane was quick to head to the lead with Jordan in close behind. Pearce spun on lap one with Craft, Elliott and Tischler all involved in the stoppage. Craft exited the event with a flat left rear tyre and Elliott a damaged nose cone support and radiator whilst Tischler restarted.

After the second attempt to start, a coming together of Nicola and Jordan was resolved with Nicola being sent to the back of the field.

With Kane (Dominator – Dominator Race Cars) and Jordan in the top two positions and Torr in third for the first eight laps it all changed when Randall took third place on lap nine.

From that moment on the leaders were settled with Kane taking a win by .252 over Jordan who never gave up on winning a third final in succession, then came Randall some 2 seconds behind the two leaders then Wayne Brims five seconds behind the winner and Torr (Rocket – Hosepro) and O’Brien (Sweet – The Performance Centre). Black, Ian Brims, Nicola, Pearce finished on the lead lap whilst Tischler, Wilson and Bradford were lapped cars.

Darren Kane spoke after the win. “We had a good night. Seemed to have no issues and everything fell into place and it was awesome to wrap up the series with a win in the final round instead of just finishing in the top half dozen.”

Kane also shared how the final went for him and gave a hint as to what might happen next year. “We had a fair gap over Steve in the final but with five laps to go I came up to lapped cars racing two wide so I didn’t take any risks which allowed Jordo to catch up to us. As for next season we will be doing a few local shows and concentrate on a lot of the national side of racing, you never know what’s around the corner so watch out for Daniel Powell’s media releases for the Boettcher Team.”

The final top five points were Kane 2909 defeating Jordan 2810, Torr 2777, Campbell 2402 and Pearce 2291 after the deletion of the worst points round for the drivers was taken away from the totals.
